  1. Working out can be fun!

    April 24, 2013 by Breanna

Are you looking for motivation to exercise and get off the couch? Perhaps you’re already an athlete and are looking for something fun and exciting.  Within the last few years there has been a large growth in racing.  Apparently, people got tired of running for sport and decided to add some flair!  I’ve recently discovered my love for obstacle course races and completed my first “Hard Charge” Race.  These races are anywhere from 4-6 miles and include obstacles like swimming across a creek, climbing walls, and crawling in mud!

  2. Filtered Water Bottles

    January 1, 2013 by Breanna

    Water Bobble

My mom got my husband and I these filtered water bottles for Christmas.  We fill them up, put them in the fridge at night, and have filtered water on the go the next day! She got us the “Bobble” water bottle (www.waterbobble.com):

Bobble is a stylish, reusable bottle that filters water as you drink, using an ingenious replaceable carbon filter. when water passes through the filter, the carbon removes chlorine and organic contaminants. bobble is intended for municipal tap water making water better, with every sip.

Bobble is a beautiful, sleek alternative to single-serve plastic water bottles, which harm the earth (and your wallet). every filter equates to 300 single-serve bottles. after a year, you’ve removed thousands of bottles from the environment, simply by filtering the water from your tap. bobble is free of BPA, Phthalates and PVC. and it is guilt-free as well. enjoy!

I know I’ve already posted on the website www.doyogawithme.com but I thought I’d advertise a specific video for all my workout friends out there! This is a 23 minute beginners yoga video to do before you run (or workout).  It really gets your body stretched and warmed up! I try and do it before any lengthy run or workout.  Check it out!

  4. Customize your own shoes!

    August 7, 2012 by Breanna

I have been loving the new multicolored athletic shoes; unfortunately, I have not been able to find a pair I just LOVE. I LOVE idea of a shoe that will go with almost anything, but was not LOVING any of the styles that were out there.  My favorite was NewBalance 890 shoe but they were $170 and I didn’t love them THAT much.  That’s when my sister-in-law reminded me that you can customize your shoes at www.nike.com  The pair I chose was $130, which IS a little high…but at least I’m paying for something that is EXACTLY what I want and COMPLETELY unique!  I have not yet purchased these bad boys, but they are definitely on my Amazon wish list!

    To customize your own pair:

    1. Go to www.nike.com
    2. Scroll over “shop” to bring up the option “Customize” and click.
    3. Choose the shoe you would like to customize and then follow the commands!
    4. On the top right there is an option to “capture” which will allow you to take a picture of what you’ve made.  That way if you start making changes and decide you liked what it looked like 3 clicks ago…you can go back to the picture! It also allows you to take multiple pictures so you can compare the shoes you created.
    5. At the bottom of the page you can look at “community shoes” and explore what others have created.  You can also choose a pre-made pair and customize it to your liking.
    6. You will have to create a login to actually save and purchase your shoe.
    7. I would highly recommend trying on the type of shoe at your local shoe store so you KNOW it’s the one you want.  I don’t think you can return customized pairs.

  5. Protein Calculator

    March 23, 2012 by Breanna

    Calculator

To follow up on my “don’t eat red meat” post from yesterday, I thought I’d provide a “protein calculator” for those of you who are concerned about not getting enough protein.  When I started cutting meat out of my daily intake (eating it only 3-4 times per week) my husband expressed concerns with my nutrition.  I TRIED assuring him that I was getting enough through natural, raw foods such as spinach (check out my tropical green smoothie), almonds, and other foods listed on yesterday’s blog.  Check out this link for a “Protein Intake Calculator” to determine your protein needs!

  6. Warrior Dash

    March 6, 2012 by Breanna

I’m always looking for new motivations to keep me in shape so when the “Warrior Dash” came to Tulsa I was pumped! The Warrior Dash is:

A mud-crawling, fire-leaping, extreme 5k run from hell. Warriors conquer extreme obstacles, push their limits and celebrate with music, beer and Warrior helmets

Basically it is a 5K with obstacles all along the way like rope walls, fire leaping, and mud crawling.  I was in shape for a 5K but this was TOUGH! It was a really fun way to workout and since my husband joined me it was also something we could share together! Check out the website www.warriordash.com for dates and locations of the next Dash.  If you are looking for more intense competition check out the www.spartanrace.com which offers more intense versions of the Warrior Dash.

  7. Nike Training Club App

    February 28, 2012 by Breanna

    Nike Training Club App

I’m so excited about this new fitness app! I get bored so easily and am always looking for a new workout.  This app gives you your own personal trainer via your iphone or ipad.  You can choose workouts under different categories:  ”lean,” “toned,” “strong,” and it has more than 85 custom-built workouts. As you complete workouts you can unlock exclusive extra workouts and recipes.

Not only does it provide workouts, it has voice output to tell you when it’s time to switch moves AND provides videos of each move so you know how to do it properly.  You can choose different timed workouts such as 15, 30, and 45 minutes.  You can even set your itunes playlist to match up with the workout.

I just started this week and absolutely love it because I can choose “advanced” setting if I really want a sweat or “beginners” if I need a break.  You should try it out!

  8. Online Yoga and Pilates

    February 26, 2012 by Breanna

    Yoga

I’ve been trying to get myself jazzed up to do yoga classes because I KNOW they are good for me; HOWEVER, I don’t want to look silly in a class of people AND I don’t want to pay a lot of money.  I ended up finding this website www.doyogawithme.com that has free videos at all levels! It’s been fun to try a few out and it is nice to have a choice between just a quick stretch and a full blown workout!

  9. “Biggest Loser” in the workplace

    February 21, 2012 by Breanna

    weight-scale

As the New Year crept up on us many people at my workplace were announcing their resolutions, many of which included fitness and diet plans.  I saw this as an opportunity for a work project! We came up with “Fit and Fabulous 2012″ so we were encouraging being healthy rather than losing weight.  Here are some tips if you want to develop a “Fit and Fabulous” in your workplace.

    • Send out a company e-mail to gauge the number of people interested (we had 24 at our company!)
    • Decide who is going to be “in charge” of the competition (e.g. creating rules, enforcing rules, organizing everything)
    • Choose the type of competition you want to have (e.g. individual competition, group competitions, will there be weekly competitions)–Our workplace chose teams so we could work together for greater outcomes!
    • Talk with your boss about potential incentives and if they will get involved (our boss was awesome and gave us a budget for weekly prizes)  If your workplace cannot provide funding, you may want to consider increasing the registration cost so you can spend money on any extras (e.g. weekly incentives, competitions)
    • Use this word document to hammer out all details (e.g. length of competition, cost to register, time/place of weekly weigh-ins, any additional rules): Biggest Loser Rules This also includes a release for all competitors to sign before the competition begins.
    • Choose one person (does not have to be the leader of the competition) to be the weigh-in person each week; also, choose one scale that will be used each week (we used a Weigh Watchers scale from Walmart)
    • If you are daring, come up with weekly competitions…we had attempted but it was difficult to find time/places/activities that could work for everyone in the competition.

We are five weeks in to our competition at work and it has been great (except when we had to weigh in after Superbowl weekend!).  Many people began work out programs over lunch and doing workout classes together.  Each week I send out an e-mail with percentage of weight lost for each team and who was the “Biggest Loser” of the week.  We have weekly prizes like gift cards to Subway or coffee mugs with low calorie tea, hot chocolate, etc.  Our final weigh-in is in April!

  10. Bob Harper Shopping Cart

    February 10, 2012 by Breanna

    Bob Harper

I saw this move on the Biggest Loser the other night.  Hop on the treadmill but DON’T turn it on.  Grab on to the handles and make the track move by yourself like you are pushing a really heavy shopping cart.  I created a little workout with this move:

    1:00-2:00: Shopping Cart

2:00:5:00: Jog or walk on incline

    5:00-6:00: Shopping Cart

6:00-10:00: Jog or walk on incline…

Basically I do one minute of shopping cart at every 5 minute mark for 30 minutes.  It feels great!
