  1. China Hutch Re-Vamped!

    June 28, 2012 by Breanna

I got this old hutch from my mom when we moved.  I was not digging the black on black on black so decided to add some color.  I went to the hardware store and purchased sample size of Behr “Retro Avocado” and it covered the back of the hutch, the two front doors, and I even had a little left over for other projects!

    BEFORE:

    AFTER (without china)

    AFTER (with China):

And finally, the color scheme of the dining room that helped me choose this very bright green!

  2. Cleaning Schedule

    June 26, 2012 by Breanna

I read a post on Pinterest that suggested spreading your cleaning chores across the week.  I thought this was a fabulous idea; my slightly obsessive brain makes me feel like a need to deep clean my house by the end of each week! Have a “daily chore” keeps me from wasting a precious weekend day scrubbing the whole house.  In addition to “daily chores,” many people on Pinterest created “Monthly Chores” (e.g. week one: windows, week two: clean out fridge”) or “Deep Cleaning Chores.”  I made this handy little spreadsheet to print and keep on the fridge and will start putting it to use this week!

  4. Tool Organization

    June 22, 2012 by Breanna

Okay, so my husband and I do not have much of  a tool collection.  We’ve lived an an apartment so have limited our tools to an “all in one craftsman toolset” and a random tupperware of nails, screws, hammers, tape measures, etc.  Despite our limited inventory, our small tupperware of tools was driving me nuts.  I literally found 9 different plastic baggies full of different sized screws, washers, nails, tacks, etc.  Although our major tools were nicely housed in our craftsman toolbox, we needed some help with all the little things.  When I ran across this jewelry organizer at Walmart, I knew I had found my match.  It has removable walls to adjust the size of the compartments, is compact, and easy to organize!

Notice the different sized compartments I created myself with just a pull and slide of the plastic walls!

Five dollars to completely organize all my small tool pieces…SOLD!

  5. Detoxifying Summer Water

    June 20, 2012 by Breanna

I found many posts on Pinterest for this no calorie, detoxifying, refreshing beverage.  I will admit, I’m not a big fan of cucumber so on my second attempt I cut the cucumber in half and added an extra lemon.  Seeing my delicious concoction every time I opened
the fridge motivated me to drink more water and stay away from the food! It gave me inspiration to try different combinations…what about sliced oranges? Lemon and lime together? If you try a new mix, let me know! For now, here’s the recipe for this summer water:

    INGREDIENTS

    • 2 liters water
    • 1 cucumber (I used half but if you like cucumbers go all the way!) peeled and cut into thin slices
    • 1 lemon sliced
    • 8-10 mint leaves

    INSTRUCTIONS

    • Stir all ingredients in a large pitcher.  Store in the fridge to keep cool!

  7. Brownie Cookies from “Tasty Kitchen”

    Brownie Cookies

I found these easy and oh-so-chocolatey cookies at www.tastykitchen.com. They were so chewy and gooey…AND, best of all…they were EASY AND FAST!  My husband took them to work and claimed “I ate around 15 of those things!”  Find the direct see direct link http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/desserts/fudgy-brownie-cookies/

  8. “Manbox”

    June 11, 2012 by Breanna

So I’m a bit of a neat freak, and feel very strongly that 90% of everything in our house should have it’s own place.  I’m okay with a “junk drawer,” ONE “junk drawer” or even a spare room that holds the extras we have not yet found a place for; however, I have a REALLY hard time with areas like this:

In case you can’t see, this pile is: our dog’s poop bags, gum, a mason jar lid, a plug adaptor, and my husband’s sunglasses.  Speaking of my husband, he is usually the breaker of the rule “everything has a place” as seen below on our dresser:

This picture includes: my husband’s wallet, loose credit cards, loose cash, glasses, watch, and change…which had just been put in this jar by me after I had collected the loose change from the kitchen table, end table, dresser, floor, and laundry room.  To be fair, my husband is not  slob, but I have high standards and decided I need to find a way to help him without being a nagging wife.  ENTER THE MANBOX…THAT’S RIGHT LADIES A “MAN BOX.”

Let’s be honest men, you have accessories too! Glasses, wallets, watches, rings….AND THEY ALL NEED A PLACE.  I decided to use my old jewelry box as a  ”Manbox” for my husband.  The good new is, if another man were to ever walk into our bedroom, he would never know the “Manbox,” was my husband’s, it just looks like a woman’s jewelry box in our bedroom!

Now, he has a spot to “throw things…”

A spot for his glasses (multiple pairs because he’s an optometrist):

    A spot for watches:

And a spot for other random things that would end up piled up on our dresser!

    I LOVE OUR MANBOX!

  9. Hat Organizer

    June 9, 2012 by Breanna

    Hat organizer

While going through all my organization items, I ran across this shoe organizer that only held small shoes like flip flops and small slides.  Since I had already organized our shoes with the three other shoe organizers I had in my possession, I decided to use this one to organize all of our baseball caps.  It ended up being the perfect size and now our hats are easy to find and easy to put away!

  10. School Picture Display

    June 5, 2012 by Breanna

I’m always trying to figure out where to put the school photos we get from nieces, nephews, siblings, cousins, etc.  I hate just throwing them on the fridge to get lost in coupons and other random paperwork.  In our last apartment I would find frames for each school photo but the next set of pictures we would get would be different sizes! I felt like I was constantly trying to keep the “school picture display” updated and cute.  I finally decided to make a photo collage frame that allowed me to just clip on any picture we received.  It’s easy to add, easy to take off, holds multiple pictures, AND it’s cute!

Luckily, I have a whole room of decor I am still attempting to use and found this large from with no glass or backing…perfect! Initially, I arranged some strong ribbon horizontally across the frame, but when I finished, it just didn’t look right.  So I moved to using a diagonal pattern and secured with hot glue followed by small nails (probably not necessary but I know for sure they are secure!) This turned out much better and gave me better options for arranging!

Once I flipped it over, I had a nice little frame to clip photos on!

Finally, I used some clothespins to attach school pictures and “tada!” I now have an organized, compact way to display all the little loved ones in my life! (Later I ended up using Martha Stewart metallic paint to make the clothespins look a little more rustic.  I would also prefer the tiny clothespins but have made a pact with myself to not purchase any decor until I have used up all I have in storage!)
